The Farm Bureau Mutual Fire Insurance Company was organized in 1928 under the leadership of first President George Putnam with a $25,000 loan granted by the First National Bank, Concord, NH on January 17, 1928. The company then received its license to write insurance on property of Farm Bureau Federation members in the State of New Hampshire.

Within a year of operation, it was determined that many farmers were interested in additional insurance protection for their property and newly acquired automobiles. Consequently, in May 1928, the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company of Concord was organized. The mutual fire and automobile companies were merged in 1952 to form Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Concord, New Hampshire.

While the company had become a multi-line insurer with service available to the general public, the name Farm Bureau Mutual gave the connotation that only those with farm connections were eligible for insurance. Therefore, to establish an image more in keeping with the company marketing methods and underwriting philosophy, the name of Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was replaced with Concord General Mutual Insurance Company in 1966. At that time, The Concord Group Insurance Companies became the group name to include present and future subsidiaries.
